Scholarship Name: Ronald McDonald House Charities Scholarships

Description: Since 1985, the Ronald McDonald House Charities has been providing scholarships to financial needy students to help them realize their dreams of a higher education. Today, RMHC has four different scholarship opportunities:

• The RMHC Scholars program is a $1,000 regional scholarship for students of Asian-Pacific heritage.
• The RMHC/African-American Future Achievers is $1,000 regional scholarship program for students of African American or Black Caribbean heritage.
• The RMHC/HACER program is a $1,000 regional scholarship for students of Hispanic heritage.

Among the pool of HACER applicants, four will be selected for the prestigious HACER National Scholarships, which provides $100,000, payable over four years.

To apply for any RMHC scholarship, applicants must be legal U.S. residents, seniors in high school, and planning to enroll full-time in a two- or four-year college or university. Applicants are required to complete an application and include a high school transcript, letter of recommendation and a personal statement. Applicants must also include a copy of their parent’s most recent tax return (1040).

Juniors and seniors interested in taking a DUAL ENROLLMENT off-campus class outside of the regular school day this Spring 2014 should make an appointment to meet with their Guidance Counselor.  Douglas Anderson's goal is to submit students' completed Dual Enrollment applications on November 6.

In conjunction with Mayor Brown’s Essay Contest and Duval County Schools’ Jacksonville Goes to College Week, we are having a visual art contest. We are requesting that student art work be submitted for judging and inclusion as potential cover design of a children’s book of essays. Submitted art work will be judged in the categories of Elementary school, Middle school and High school. At least three winners will be chosen from each category.

The art work should relate to the Essay theme of “Education is …” The theme seeks to “explain what education means to you or tell us in your own words what you believe education is and how it will help you reach your dreams and goals.”

PSAT October 16

REMINDER: Sophomores and Juniors – The PSAT is coming up on Wednesday, October 16th. All sophomores will take the test at no cost to them.  Juniors who elect to take the PSAT must register and pay the $14 fee by Friday, October 11 and will be able to pay Ms. Thurlow during the last 10 minutes of each lunch at the senior patio. Any junior who is unable to pay the fee should speak to his/her guidance counselor. Remember juniors, this is your last opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship!

ESA Foundation Scholarships

Founded in 1929, Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA) is a leadership and service organization, bringing volunteers together in programs and projects that make a positive difference to the world community.  The ESA Foundation (ESAF) is a 501(c)3 public foundation, established in1970, as an organization exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. 

 

Currently, the ESA Foundation offers 185 scholarships a year for deserving United States and International students who meet the criteria of individual endowments.  Information about the scholarships, requirements and applications is available at  http://www.epsilonsigmaalpha.org/scholarships-and-grants/scholarships/how-to-apply.   There will be a list of available scholarships by the state of the student’s residence. On Wednesday, October 16, Douglas Anderson will administer the PSAT/NMSQT to all 10th graders and interested 11th graders.

The PSAT serves as an excellent preparation tool for students who will be taking the SAT for college entrance. It also provides feedback to the school to determine preparedness for college.

The test has an extra function for 11th graders.  It is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). That means that current juniors interested in the National Merit Scholars program, as well as other qualifying scholarships, should register for the test.

Sophomores will take the PSAT at no cost to them.  Juniors who elect to take the PSAT must register and pay the $14 fee by Friday, October 11. (Any junior who is unable to pay the fee should speak to his/her guidance counselor.) This is juniors’ last opportunity to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship.

Mayo Clinic and the School of Health Sciences will be hosting their high school Boot Camp event this fall.  This event will take place on Saturday, October 26, 2013.

The purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for high school students to learn about potential careers in healthcare, and to create an exciting, hands-on experience to attract young people to healthcare careers. 

 This event has had an overwhelming response in the past so you are encouraged to return the completed paperwork as soon as possible as they can only accept 50 students for the event and it is based on a first-come first-served basis.  Any students interested in participating should complete the paperwork below and return to Elaine Riddell's attention.
