2014 Black History Month Student and Teacher contests

Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott invite K-12 students to participate in the 2014 Black History Month art and essay contests. Students, parents, teachers and principals have also been invited to nominate full-time African-American educators in elementary, middle or high schools for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.

The student contests focus on the theme “Dr. Martin Luther King’s Dream: 50 Years in Action.” Students are asked to respond to how they are influenced and inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Information about the contests and Florida’s Black History Month is available on Florida’s Black History Month website at www.FloridaBlackHistory.com.

About the Student Contests

Art Contest for Grades K-3 – The Black History Month art contest is open to all Florida students in grades K-3, and two winners will be selected.

Essay Contest for Grades 4-12 – The Black History Month essay contest is open to all Florida students in grades 4 through 12. Three winners will be selected: one elementary student (grades 4-5), one middle-school student (grades 6-8), and one high school student (grades 9-12).

Winners will receive a four-year Florida College Plan scholarship provided by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation.

About the Excellence in Education Award

Governor Scott’s annual Black History Month Excellence in Education Award Contest is open to all African-American, full time educators in an elementary, middle or high school in Florida. Three winners will be selected: one elementary (K-5) teacher, one middle school (6-8) teacher and one high school (9-12) teacher.

Looking for volunteer hours?

 The District Guidance Office is looking for 10-15 volunteers to help with materials for an upcoming event. You will volunteer at the school board building, 3^rd floor,  this Friday, January 17, 2014 from 12 – 4PM.  You will be preparing the volunteer folders and beginning to prep material boxes for the schools involved.

Opportunities for students!

Students who are interested in participating in ACT/SO (Afro-Academic Cultural Technological Scientific Olympics) must sign up in guidance to receive an application.

Mrs. White will distribute applications on Wednesday, January 15.

Students interested in FAMU are welcome to attend a Scholarship and Recruitment session that will be held Thursday, January 16 at Andrew Jackson High School the time is 6:30 pm. 

FAME (Format for Affecting My Enrolment) for students in grades 10, 11, and 12 this program is through FSCJ.  See Mrs. White January 15.

College Scholarship Fair this Saturday!

This fair is for all highschool students, but seniors should come with copies of current transcripts and test scores for instant admissions decisions and scholarship offers! More than 20 colleges and universities will be in attendance. Many will be providing scholarships ranging from$ 5,000 to $100,000 on the spot. In addition, most schools will be taking applications, waiving the application fees and providing acceptance letters.

The It’s HER Business Teen Entrepreneurship Conference is a one-day conference for girls ages 15-18 enrolled in high school.  We are now in our 9th year.  This event brings parents, students, school administration, and women business owners together in one forum and has so far exposed over 800 young women to a whole new world of opportunities. 

It is designed to encourage financial literacy and help girls learn about starting businesses and managing personal finances through interactive games and hands-on activities.  We use successful local business women as conference facilitators/mentors to share their ideas and experiences with the participants.

•          Must be 15-18 years of age and enrolled in a Duval, Clay, or St. Johns County High School to attend.

•          Both Forms must be either e-mailed/scanned to: mhague@unf.edu, faxed to: (904) 620-2567 OR mailed to: Marice Hague, Small Business Development Center at UNF; 12000 Alumni Drive; Jacksonville, FL  32224 by Friday, February 1, 2014.  The forms are also located online.

Duke Summer College Program - HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Duke University proudly begins accepting applications TODAY, December 2, for two exciting academic programs for high school students during the summer of 2014!

Duke’s four-week Summer College for High School Students program takes place June 28 – July 25 and is designed to enhance your students’ readiness for future admission to an undergraduate degree program at a selective and prestigious university or college.  Students currently in grades 10 & 11 will make friends from all over the globe as they learn from the highly-trained, highly-intriguing faculty of Duke University and earn college credit.

For students currently in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 we offer a new three-week programDuke Summer Academy for High School Students July 5 - 25. This program is designed for personal enrichment and offers a two-part daytime course in Global Citizenship and Leadership and an evening course with many exciting options available. The classroom environment is intimate enough to gain the individual attention you need to thrive, and the residential life is full of exciting excursions and activities.

The McCurry Foundation Scholarship

The McCurry Foundation, Inc. is a local, private foundation that was established in 1994.  As a charitable organization, their goal is to provide needed financial assistance to college and university students who exemplify leadership, work ethic and academic excellence.  To date, they have awarded over 300 grants totaling over $250,000.  First year grants average between $1,000 - $1,250.

Steps to register:
